Regional Update

Regional season is almost over. The Central/Southeast Regional is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th in Arlington, VA. 75 athletes from 16 states and the District of Columbia will take the stage to demonstrate their love for yoga and earn the chance to advance to the 2019 National Championship.

All of the Regional Results, including the Running Results are posted on the website under "Our Events" - Results.

This year our National Championship is again scheduled in conjunction with the State Games of America. We participated in the State Games for the first time in 2017 in Grand Rapids. The State Games of America is a nation wide organization that puts on a bi-yearly National Championship bringing together over 14,000 athletes competing in 48 sports, see all of the sports represented Here.

Invitations to the first place winners for each state have already gone out, except for the States from the Central/Southeast Region. Some Running Results invitations have gone out as well. So far we have 22 athletes entered and 165 expected. The rest of the invitations will go out as soon as the Central/Southeast Regional is completed.

All of the information on the championship, including hotel and ticket information is on our event page: 2019 National Championship. Athletes do not need to purchase tickets.

We are looking for booth and business/studio sponsors for Nationals. To find out more and sign up go Here.

Changes in IYSF Leadership and Format

The International Yoga Sports Federation, or IYSF, is our international governing body for Yoga Sports. This is the organization that sets our rules and competition format, generates scoring tools, and puts on our bi-yearly International Championship. A new executive committee was elected in China at the last International Championship where a Plenary Assembly elected Umang Dawn, VP Head of Disciplinary Commission, Iveta Kalnina, VP Sports and Events Responsible, Ainslie Faust, VP Treasurer, and Sebastien Bonnet, VP Secretary General.

Ulises Calatayud, was just elected as the new President of IYSF at a Plenary Assembly held online on March 14, 2019. Jean Agress, from USA Yoga's board, represented and voted on behalf of USA Yoga at both meetings.

Next season the format is opened up and several new postures have been added. See the new IYSF Rules and Posture Guidelines Here. Except for the Youth 7-11 Division, which remains the same, all six postures are optional and can be performed in any order. You must pick a posture from each of the six posture groups, if you miss one group, then there is a one point deduction. Also the three characteristics of Balance, Strength, and Flexibility, must be demonstrated twice within the six posture routine, or you will suffer a one point deduction.

This format is effective for next season, beginning on September 1, 2019 and will not be used for this year's National Championship.

To reduce confusion over the new Rules and Format IYSF is offering an online Rules Clinic ($20). The first one is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th at 17:00 (UTC + 2:00). You can register Here. USA Yoga will be scheduling  some in the future.

IYSF has also scheduled a Rules and Coaching Clinic in person on June 7-9 in Washington, DC for American athletes, judges, and coaches. Go to their Event Page to find out more.
