Staying with the Positive

Caty Cook is competing in the USA Yoga 2019 National Championship in the Adult 50+ Division.

There is much written about yoga competition, past and present, some controversial...

Like anything, going through the experience of whatever you choose is your teacher.  I choose to stay with the positive.

My reasons for participating in yoga competition is a culmination of my own life experience and how yoga changed the quality of my life, and those who inspired me along the way.  My practice is humble.  My routine is a simple expression of the asanas that resonate with me, demonstrated to the best of my ability, in a way that shows others that yoga is accessible to anyone.

My hope is that I will inspire others to take care of themselves regardless of age and limitations.

My story is about how I got to yoga. When I got there my mind, body and spirit were broken.  It was yoga and that community of people that cared where I learned to take care of myself.

I learned we all face challenges, only the particulars are different.

In my home studio in Richmond VA, I was fascinated by the camaraderie, respect, and encouragement that competitors demonstrated, and I wanted to be part of the experience.  This year I’ll be representing Pennsylvania.  I have had and continue to have the time of my life practicing, teaching, meeting people, learning and experiencing the bond that yoga practice and competition creates.  It’s a place where everyone helps one another, and you hope each and every competitor gets through their routine, regardless of the outcome.

Competition to me is sharing my practice, demonstrating stillness and gratitude, for everything that brought me to that three minutes in time.--
